Sponsored Ads Are Already Showing Up Inside ChatGPT Conversations

Nobody announced this to you. Comscore just noticed.

Comscore expanded its AI intelligence tracking to measure sponsored placements appearing directly inside ChatGPT chat responses, not just in search-style results. In one tracked category, hotel-related prompts, sponsored ad presence went from 6% of responses in March to 24% in May. That's a fourfold jump in two months, inside an interface most marketing teams still file mentally under "just a chatbot."

Why this is different from the ChatGPT Ads headlines

The 31-market European rollout was a formal, announced ad product. This is something quieter: sponsored content appearing within the flow of a conversation, measured by an outside firm rather than disclosed in a launch post. The distinction matters because it tells you the channel isn't waiting for a tidy public launch in your market before it starts affecting how your category shows up in AI answers.

If a quarter of hotel-related answers already carry a sponsored placement, the norms for that category are being set right now, by the brands that showed up first.

What a fourfold jump in one quarter tells you

Two months is a short window, and one category isn't the whole market. But the direction is unambiguous. Sponsored presence is not creeping in, it's accelerating, and the categories with clear commercial intent (travel, hospitality, anything with a booking or a purchase attached) are the ones filling up first. Yours is probably on that list.

The teams treating AI chat as a channel to "keep an eye on for next year" are working from a timeline the data doesn't support. The build-up is happening this quarter, not next.

What to actually do about it

Find out how your category looks now. Run the prompts a customer would actually type, in ChatGPT and the other major assistants, and see whether sponsored or cited brands are already appearing. This is a one-afternoon audit and it tells you whether you're early or already behind.

Get your content into the citable layer regardless. Whether or not you buy placements, AI answers pull from clear, well-structured, genuinely useful pages. The work that makes you citable in an AI answer is the same work that's always made for good content, it just has a new payoff now.

Size any paid test as learning, not performance. The playbook for advertising inside a conversation isn't written. Budget for it accordingly, small and deliberate, with the goal of understanding the surface before your competitors do rather than hitting a return target this quarter.

The window, roughly

Emerging ad channels have a period where being present is cheap and being early is an advantage, and then they get crowded and expensive like every channel before them. Comscore's data says that early window for AI chat is open now and closing at a pace most roadmaps haven't accounted for. Tracking exactly this kind of shift for clients is what we do as an AI growth marketing agency and performance marketing agency in one.
